Cheers. [This message has been edited by Peter (edited 04-22-2003).]Peter Whilst doing a little research on gateways, I came across a plan of Alnwick gatehouse in Salters, Castles of Northumberland.
I was interested to note that the gate has two posterns inserted.
One to the front in what can be classed as the barbican (on the right looking out), and the second on the left. Seemingly behind the drawbridge and any other barrier.
As I have never visited this castle, I was wondering if anyone had noted this odd arrangement ?
I believe that it is no longer the main entrance into the castle.
There is also another postern (in its own tower) on the far side of the keep. Details on any of these would be more the welcome.
